One of six family members who have attended GW, Mary Hotchkiss, JD '83, LLM '85, is grateful for the education that led to her long career at the University of Washington School of Law, where she recently stepped down as Associate Dean to return to full-time teaching. She is giving back to GW Law wellness programs with annual gifts and with a legacy gift that is a percentage of her retirement plan.

"In many ways my JD from GW Law was like a union card: it opened doors for me," Mary said. "Law school was hard for me, and I'm grateful that I had the support I did. I want to return that support."

Her retirement-plan gift is through a simple beneficiary designation. "It's very direct; the proceeds are immediately available to nonprofits and don't have to go through probate," she explained.

Mary's father, twin brother, two sisters, and one brother-in-law all attended GW. She has worked at the University of Washington for 27 years and lives in Seattle with her spouse Mary Whisner. After decades of advising students, Mary sees the need for funding health and wellness initiatives.

"Scholarships are important," she said, "but I also want to make sure that students have mental health counseling if they need it - or whatever extra support helps them deal with the many challenges of law school."
